St Andrew’s College Students and the Dukes Young Leaders Award

Posted: 4th December 2024

This year St Andrew’s College Cambridge launched their Dukes Young Leaders Award, which comprises of four different levels, gold, platinum, diamond and crown. Students will be working towards completing the DYLA alongside their studies at St Andrews.

Opportunities to complete sections of the awards are offered to students both inside and outside the classroom. I am delighted to say that we have already been able to award 12 students with DYLA certificates, with three of those accomplishing the highest level, Crown.

Some of the experiences that students have taken part in include summer leadership courses, outreach at a local secondary school where St Andrews students planned and led a diversity workshop, teaching year 8 students some basic Chinese characters, phrases and sharing cultural traditions, and joining residential activity weekends. Other students have represented the school in different sports, with some taking on the role of captain.

We have an active student council who are great communicators, and vital in helping shape the future of the college. These students will be developing their leadership skills by running assemblies and supporting with house challenges. The skills they build upon whilst fulfilling this role are a key part of the DYLA.

It’s been great to see the students engage in the award and share all of the amazing things that they have been doing. The award challenges students to seek out opportunities and experiences that support them to develop lifelong skills as well as giving them fun memories along the way.
