From Annette Poulain
I’m thrilled to be joining St Andrew’s College Cambridge as the new Head.
I grew up in Cambridge, so this feels a bit like coming full circle. After school gaining my A levels, I studied Sport Science and Geography (BSc QTS) at Brunel University and then launched into a teaching career that’s taken me to a range of schools, including The Leys in Cambridge, The Peterborough School, Cheltenham College, and Our Lady’s Abingdon.
Over 25 years in education, I’ve taken on various roles, like Deputy Head Pastoral at Our Lady’s Abingdon and Housemistress at Cheltenham College. These experiences have helped shape my approach to leadership focused, adaptable, and always keeping the needs of a diverse community at the heart of everything.
Earlier in my career, I was Head of Department at The Peterborough School, where I loved championing fresh ideas and high standards. I’ve taught IGCSE and A-Level courses and even worked as an exam moderator for AQA. Beyond the classroom, I’ve been deeply involved in organising sports tours, leading residential trips, mentoring EPQ projects, managing the County Athletics team, and being a safeguarding lead.
My husband Mark and I are moving back to Cambridge, which is exciting for us. We have three children Lilly and Evie, who are both at university, and our son Josh, who’s pursuing his dream career in motorsport. Outside of work, I love running and taking on challenges. Recently, I competed in a Hyrox event to raise money for charity combining fitness and community, two things I’m passionate about.
As I step into this new role, I can’t wait to help foster a culture of excellence at St Andrew’s College. Together with the students, staff, and families, I’m looking forward to building on the school’s strengths and creating a vibrant, supportive, and ambitious environment for everyone.
We are delighted that Annette has chosen to join us and wish her and her family all the very best for the future.
